WOD:
Overhead Squat 5x5
Top Load: 130 x 5 / 135 x 4
This morning I felt rested but lethargic especially for someone coming off a rest day. Be that as it may I decided (mentally) to just go hard and let whatever "happen" happen. We all went through a great little group warmup that consisted of:
2-RFT., 40-secs. @ Each Movement
Sledges
ABMATs
L-Sit Holds
That will definitely wake you up - especially smacking the dook out of a tire that never did anything wrong to you. It's liberating!
Here's a quote out of the CrossFit Journal in regards to the OHS, pretty interesting stuff:
"The overhead squat is the ultimate core exercise, the heart of the snatch, and peerless in developing effective athletic movement.
This functional gem trains for efficient transfer of energy from large to small body parts - the essence of sport movement. For this reason it is an indispensable tool for developing speed and power.
The overhead squat also demands and develops functional flexibility, and similarly develops the squat by amplifying and cruelly punishing faults in squat posture, movement, and stability...
The overhead squat is to midline control, stability, and balance what the clean and snatch are to power - unsurpassed."
From "The Overhead Squat" CrossFit Journal - Issue 36
Interesting indeed... not that I'm an expert or anything but I feel as if the OHS separates the "wheat from the chaff" so to speak. Anyway, my 1-RM. OHS is 165-lbs. which just so happens to be my bodyweight so I was looking to hit at least 135-lbs. for 5 reps. I ended up hitting 130 for 5 and 135 for 4 which I'll take considering a couple months ago I almost soiled my adult diaper trying to OHS 115-lbs. But progress is progress - since then I've PR'ed my OHS by 50-lbs., and I've hit a 5-rd. WOD that included 115-lbs. OHS's. I'd like to think of that as progress.
