Push Press 3-3-3-2-2-1
Top Load: 190-lbs (25-lb. PR) /
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited about my strength gains as of late. Power Clean PR, Front Squat PR, Deadlift PR, etc. - after a cruddy couple of weeks it felt good to come back and do some legitimate work.
This morning we worked Push Presses starting with reps of 3, then 2, and finally singles. When working overhead I tend to burn out easily so I moved to singles fairly early in order to have enough left in the tank for some heavy singles. This strategy just seems to work for me you know? So I gotta go with what I know!
Made my way through some lower weights, and started hitting singles at 135-lbs. I'm gonna be honest, I felt really, really good this morning. Maybe it was the nice, long weekend. Maybe I was just in the zone either way I easily blew past my previous PR of 165-lbs. and before I knew it I was looking @ 190-lbs. for a new PR. The lift @ 190 felt awesome! I felt strong and had a good jump to get the bar up. The thing that "clicked" for me today was realizing that having everything tight helps immensely in the Push Press. The wave of contraction was there, and so was the transference of power from the legs to the extremities - it finally made sense this morning.
And there I was... 200-lbs. on the bar going for a 35-lb. personal record. I made three attempts, and I just couldn't stick 'em. They all failed for various reasons: on the 1st attempt I underestimated the load and didn't generate enough leg drive. On the 2nd attempt I think I generated too much drive, lost control of the weight overhead and actually dropped it behind me (nearly taking out the beloved boombox). On the 3rd attempt I generated plenty of drive but I was just too burnt to press it out... EPIC FAIL.
Today is a huge confidence booster for me, I know I can get 200-lbs. next time - I'm looking forward to it.
